The Trailing Succulent with Whimsical Foliage.
The **String of Bananas** (*Curio radicans*) is a favorite trailing houseplant, celebrated for its plump, glossy, crescent-shaped leaves that truly resemble tiny green bananas. As a succulent, it is exceptionally **drought-tolerant** and perfect for placing in a hanging basket where its vines can cascade dramatically. It's an easy-care option, provided you avoid the biggest mistake: overwatering.
Care & Info
- Light: Thrives in **bright, indirect light** to even a few hours of gentle morning direct sun. Insufficient light will cause the "bananas" to become sparse and the vines to be "leggy." Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: As a succulent, it stores water in its leaves and is very sensitive to overwatering. **Allow the soil to dry out completely** between waterings. When the leaves look slightly wrinkled or deflated, it's a good time to water thoroughly. Reduce watering significantly in the winter.
- Soil: Requires a **very well-draining soil mix**. Use a pre-made succulent/cactus potting mix, or create your own by adding perlite or coarse sand to regular potting soil. Good drainage is non-negotiable to prevent root rot.
- Temperature/Humidity: Prefers average household temperatures (60°F - 80°F). It tolerates **dry air** well and does not require high humidity. Protect it from temperatures below 50°F and cold drafts.
Sizing and Variants
Please select your desired pot size from the options above. All plants are well-established, actively trailing, and planted in nursery pots with drainage.
| Size (Pot Diameter) | Approx. Trail Length | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 4-Inch Pot | 6″ - 10″ | Beginners, Shelf Displays |
| 6-Inch Hanging Pot | 12″ - 20″ | Hanging Baskets, Bright Corners |
Important Notes
- Pet note: **Mildly Toxic to cats and dogs.** Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and skin irritation. It must be placed in a secure hanging position completely out of reach of all pets.
- Propagation: One of the easiest plants to propagate! Simply take a cutting, let the end dry/callus for a day, and lay it directly on top of moist soil to root.
- Troubleshooting: Wrinkled leaves usually mean underwatering; mushy/yellow stems mean overwatering and potential root rot.
