The Iconic & Dramatic Tropical Houseplant.
The **Monstera Deliciosa**, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant or Split-Leaf Philodendron (though it is not a true Philodendron), is native to the tropical rainforests of Central America. Known for its lush, leathery leaves that develop natural holes and splits (**fenestrations**) as they mature, it's a statement piece that brings a bold, jungle-like feel to any space. It grows as a climbing vine, often needing support from a moss pole as it matures.
Care & Info
- Light: Prefers **bright, indirect light**. The plant needs good light to develop its signature leaf fenestrations. Direct sun can scorch the leaves, but a few hours of gentle morning sun is typically fine. Rotate the plant periodically for even growth.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the **top 2-3 inches of soil are dry**. This usually translates to watering about once a week in the summer and reducing frequency in the winter. Avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
- Soil: Use a rich, **well-draining potting mix**. Amending a standard potting mix with chunky materials like perlite, orchid bark, or coco coir will help mimic its native growing medium and prevent compaction.
- Temperature/Humidity: Loves warmth, thriving between 65°F - 85°F. As a tropical plant, it enjoys **high humidity** but can tolerate average household levels. Increase humidity with a humidifier or a pebble tray to prevent brown, crispy leaf edges.
- Support: As it grows, providing a sturdy support like a **moss pole or trellis** is essential. This encourages larger leaves and better fenestration by mimicking its natural climbing habit.
Sizing and Variants
Please select your preferred size and maturity for this statement plant. All plants are sold in nursery pots with established root systems.
| Size (Pot Diameter) | Approx. Plant Height | Leaf Maturity |
|---|---|---|
| 6-Inch Pot | 12″ - 18″ | Young, often with few or no fenestrations. |
| 10-Inch Pot | 24″ - 36″ | Developing fenestrations on mature leaves. |
Important Notes
- Pet note: **Toxic to cats and dogs.** The plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense irritation, burning, and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and throat if ingested. Keep out of reach of all pets.
- Aerial Roots: The long, brown, rope-like roots that grow from the stem are normal. They help the plant attach to surfaces in the wild. You can tuck them into the soil/moss pole or prune them.
- Cleaning: Wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to remove dust, which helps the plant absorb light more efficiently.
