Nysa Botanica's Origin Story

In spring of 2025, Nysa Botanica's two founders began dreaming of a way to share their love of nature, cultivate a sense of community, and to beautify their urban neighborhood. In May 2025, they created Nysa Botanica and gave it the mission to cultivate joy around plants and flowers in the concrete heart of the city that they loved.

One founder's appreciation of third spaces overcame the other founder's skepticism of brick-and-mortar businesses, so the couple started looking for a space to rent. In late May 2025, after a month-long search for the right space, the founders came across a listing for a space with character. Though it lacked hot water and needed serious TLC, it fit the vision and had space for the business to come alive and host people.

By the start of June 2025, the founders got keys to the two-story shop that has been Nysa's home ever since. Nysa's flagship location occupies part of a charming historic building in Downtown Los Angeles's Fashion District. Before becoming Nysa's home, the space had been reinvented several times over the decades, previously housing a barber shop, an art studio, and even a residence at one point. With the help of a trusted friend, Nysa's founders renovated the space over two months. This involved a lot of blood, sweat, soap, roman clay, and more head-scratching than the team had prepared for. In those days, Nysa wasn't officially open, but sometimes let in curious neighbors to check out our budding plant stock.

In August 2025, Nysa's brick and mortar flagship store opened fully to the public (though renovating and upgrading our space hasn't stopped once in the past year). Since opening, we've offered a curated selection of plants, pots, seasonal florals, vases, gifts, and supplies in our first-floor showroom. Our second floor hosts hands-on workshops designed to foster community around flowers and plants. We've also opened our space as private venue for small events and celebrations.

The Nysa team's approach is simple: quality materials, thoughtful design, and attention to detail. Every plant and floral arrangement is handled with care and every customer is given individual attention. We welcome your questions around plants and flowers - we're here to give you the best information we can and excited to learn with you when we don't know already!

Nysa Botanica

Our first visit to the shop when it was for lease - we loved the brick and the big tree outside.

After checking out a couple of other locations, we were excited to see the vacant space at 177 W. Olympic Blvd. -- right next to Dune Restaurant.

Nysa Botanica

We learned the building had been home to a barber shop, art gallery, and residence at various points over the years.

Nysa Botanica

It was a still a blank slate for our creativity. the building just needed a little TLC!

Nysa Botanica

We upgraded from this micro sink during the renovation process, but this was how we found it.

Nysa Botanica

When it was still empty, the upstairs space felt so massive it was hard to know how to fill it. (Spoiler alert, that was the easy part.)

We knew this sink area would be so helpful for plant & flower processing. Little did we know, there was no hot water...

We couldn't wait to clean up the space and transform it into our vision. We had so many ideas for the space and the possibilities felt endless.

Our own shop stoop! We felt proud to have our own little piece of Downtown Los Angeles to take care of.

Preparing to renovate

Early June 2025
Nysa Botanica

The fluorescent lights were helpful for this stage.

Nysa Botanica

Plant care was a priority from the start. We gathered plant stock (even from our own collection). There were plenty of repotting projects for us to work on perfecting our soil mixes.

Nysa Botanica

We set up our snack and break area, which definitely came in handy for the renovation.

Nysa Botanica

Running a business involves a lot of computer work, so this office was an early addition.

The cream rug did not last.

Nysa Botanica

We grabbed some wall treatments to experiment with.

Nysa Botanica

We liked the eucalyptus color so we tried it on a test wall. The color is called Salem (from Portola Paint).

Nysa Botanica

We went with this dark, dramatic plum color for the bathroom and the front arch.

Nysa Botanica

Bathroom needed dusting for real.

Nysa Botanica

The preexisting bathroom vanity had seen better days.

Nysa Botanica

The seller was willing to further negotiate on the price so we could use this in our shop. Nothing like a Facebook Marketplace bargain!

Nysa Botanica

The bathroom level up was unmatched.

Time to get some of the renovation supplies out and reclaim our floor space!

We added counter height work tables upstairs - perfect for repotting, floral arranging, and workshops.

Nysa Botanica

This table was Nysa's first headquarters and was the site of many late night team dinners and strategy meetings.

We made a shelf to display vases.

We invested in a floral cooler to keep our "fresh flower." We eventually fixed the sign.

Nysa Botanica

Our flowers loved their cool new hang out spot and did not notice the typo in the sign.

For a while, we had an upstairs lounge area. But it turned out these chairs weren't comfy and didn't get used too much.
