Bottle Tree - Brachychiton rupestris
The desert curiosity.
The Bottle Tree is the ultimate conversation piece for the serious plant collector. Named for its extraordinary swollen trunk — a natural water reservoir that develops a dramatic, sculptural bottle-like form over time — Brachychiton rupestris brings a prehistoric, otherworldly presence to any interior that no other tree can match. Rare, slow-growing, and utterly unforgettable.
Light: Demands bright, direct to indirect light; thrives in the sunniest spot available indoors. Strong light encourages the most robust trunk development and compact, healthy growth.
Water: Extremely drought-tolerant — the swollen trunk stores water for extended periods. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water deeply. In winter, water sparingly once a month or less.
Humidity/Temp: Prefers dry air and warm conditions; thrives between 65–85°F. Tolerates dry indoor air exceptionally well — no humidifier needed. Protect from frost and cold temperatures below 50°F.
Pet note: Generally considered non-toxic to pets — a rare, statement tree that's as safe as it is spectacular.
Natural variation: Each tree is unique; the degree of trunk swelling, branching structure, and overall silhouette will vary dramatically with age and growing conditions — no two are ever alike.
